A Word About These Materials

These materials are part of an extensive series for use in Community Health Evangelism (CHE) and Neighborhood Transformation (NT) ministries. CHE facilitators skilled in participatory learning methods enable communities to escape cycles of poverty and live as followers of Jesus.

These materials are being made available for the first time to short term teams and to ministries in the developing world. They can be purchased either as an Adobe Acrobat Reader PDF by download or as printed manuals. We believe that these materials have value as teaching tools, but the material alone will not lift communities out of cycles of poverty and disease. We highly recommend that anyone using these materials take CHE training in order to get the full benefit they seek for the communities they serve.

The primary purpose for these materials is to equip CHE facilitators. Members of the CHE Network who have completed the first phase of CHE training (TOT 1) have access to the complete curriculum which includes more than 3000 lesson plans, picture books, and teaching aids. All this is available on a single DVD for a fraction of the price of purchasing the individual manuals. Also, the material will be provided to you in Microsoft© Word format so you can adapt it to your context. If you have completed TOT 1 and are a member of the Network, click here to access the full curricula.

We have discontinued providing hard copies of items where PDF files exist. The cost of creating, shipping and handling hardcopies was beyond what we charged. Therefore, to better steward the resources of God's kingdom, we are moving to more PDF downloads. Please feel free to purchase a PDF download and to make as many copies of it as you need in service of the Kingdom. If for some reason you do need hardcopies of PDF items on our web site, or if your internet download capability makes this difficult, we will be willing to support you on an as needed basis. Please contact chematerials@atmlive.org with your request and we will get back to you with the cost for creation, shipping and handling. Thank you.

CHE Workshops
Children's CHE Workshop: Can children be involved in community health evangelism? Absolutely! Most children are eager to get together to learn Bible stories as well as health and practical skills. In the process, they grow in their faith, become active in their communities, and pass what they have learned on to their family and friends. This manual contains four lessons, with the purpose of giving short-term teams background and practical skills for working with children. What is Children’s CHE gives an introduction to Children’s CHE and discusses the importance and Biblical basis of working with children. Development of Children and Communities explores ways in which Children’s CHE can lead to the growth and development of children and their communities. Teaching Children’s CHE investigates the ways that children learn, and gives an introduction to Bible storying. With Health Stories, participants learn to teach health skills through health storying as well as encouraging the children to tell the stories to others. The health stories and Bible storying are designed to help facilitate the transfer of knowledge in the community. Community Health Evangelism Overview (Short Term) Workshop: The purpose of Community Health Evangelism (CHE) work is not just breaking poverty or planting churches, though both of those things are accomplished through our Community Health Evangelism (CHE) programs. The real goal of our work is a transformation in lives and communities that is as deep as the human heart, and as broad as the whole range of the human experience in the world God made. We want Jesus to be recognized as Lord over all creation, and our development activities to reflect the depth and breadth of the kingdom of God. We are asking God to work in us and through us to transform beliefs and change behavior so that his peace, justice, compassion, and righteousness are reflected in the life of the communities we serve. This manual is designed to introduce short-term teams to CHE. The manual includes three lessons. God’s Vision for Community explores questions such as What is a community? and What is God’s vision for community? CHE Description uses a case study to present the basic elements of a CHE ministry. Finally, Roles of the Training Team, Committee, and CHEs begins to describe the key people involved in community health evangelism and their roles. The lesson plans in this manual can be used in at least a couple of ways: (1) to prepare short-term teams or (2) to teach the topic to any small group. DOWNLOAD = 1MB - ORDER NUMBER: CHEOW- $0.00

Learning that Leads to Action Workshop: Short-term teams will learn a participatory learning technique that helps communities to create their own solutions. This manual includes three lessons. This first lesson, How we Learn, examines how adults learn practical skills. These principles of learning are applied in the communities so that community members discover and develop their own solutions. During second lesson, Participatory LePSAS Learning Techniques, they will learn to do effective teaching that is Learner-centered, Problem-posing, with Self-discovery, and is Action-oriented and Spirit-guided. They will also present a problem-posing role play as a starter. In the final lesson, Learning to Facilitate a CHE Lesson, which lasts 2 to 3 hours, participants learn to use a lesson plan and prepare to facilitate a CHE lesson. If there is time, they may practice facilitating a lesson plan. They also learn to use picture books and storying as ways that the CHEs can share what they have learned in the community. The lesson plans in this manual can be used in at least a couple of ways: (1) to prepare short-term teams or (2) to teach the topic to any small group. DOWNLOAD = 1MB - ORDER NUMBER: LLAW- $0.00

Mobilizing the Church for Short Term Teams Workshop: How can the church become God’s agent of transformation in a community? And how can short-term teams work alongside the church in their wholistic outreach in the community? The first step is Seeing the Community Through God's Eyes. This lesson tells the story of Pastor Juan, who learned to see his community as Jesus saw it. Participants learn to reach out to the community in a wholistic manner. God’s Mathematics demonstrates how God often works in surprising ways to multiply our gifts for his glory. Finally, with Seed Projects, short-term teams can work with the local church to carry out small-scale projects that demonstrate God’s love to the community. The lesson plans in this manual can be used in at least a couple of ways: (1) to prepare short-term teams or (2) to teach the topic to any small group. DOWNLOAD = 1 MB - ORDER NUMBER: MTCW- $0.00

Principles of Christian Community Development Workshop: What is distinctive about Christian community development? What makes it Christian? And how can short-term teams promote community development? This manual explores three inter-related responses to those challenging questions. The first lesson, Gospel of the Kingdom, discusses the wholistic nature of the kingdom of God. Our challenge is to let Christ rule in every area of our lives, as described in Micah 6:8. Comparing Relief and Development contrasts relief, or doing things for people, with development, or enabling or teaching people so that they learn to develop themselves. Short Term Trips that Build Community Ownership discusses what outsiders, such as short-term teams, can do to help a community take control of its own development and create its own solutions. The lesson plans in this manual can be used in at least a couple of ways: (1) to prepare short-term teams or (2) to teach the topic to any small group. DOWNLOAD = 1 MB - ORDER NUMBER: PCCDW- $0.00

Using Short Term Teams with CHE Workshop: What is community health evangelism? And how can short-term teams work alongside and build up community health evangelism ministries? This manual includes three lessons. CHE Description - Basic Elements of CHE Ministry introduces community health evangelism using a CHE Case Study. How to Start CHE Programs Using Short Term Teams investigates how short-term teams can be used to empower people, not just to do things for them. In addition, short-term teams learn to work alongside a local training team to start a CHE program in a new area. How a Short Term Team can Build Capacity for a CHE Community uses a case study from La Verde, Guatemala to demonstrate how short-term teams can work to build capacity in a target community where CHE is already being done. The lesson plans in this manual can be used in at least a couple of ways: (1) to prepare short-term teams or (2) to teach the topic to any small group. DOWNLOAD = 1MB - ORDER NUMBER: USTTCW- $0.00

Womens Cycle of Life Workshop: Women's Cycle of Life is an introduction to a much larger series of lessons that focus on the role and needs of women in all stages of their lives. These lessons train short-term teams to work alongside CHEs in a ministry with women. The manual consists of four lessons. 10 Facts on Women's Health examines some of the reasons why women often have a lower quality of life, and describes some of the health risks for women, as well as ways to reduce those risks. Overview of CHE Perinatal Support – CHEPS describes ways that CHEs can give support to pregnant women through the nine months of their pregnancy and after the delivery of their newborn. Needs and Resources - The Story of Mrs. X uses a tragic story in order to reflect on the factors that make maternal death more likely and to consider how these factors can be removed or reduced. Safer Pregnancy and Delivery uses Hiwot’s story to demonstrate risk factors during pregnancy, and discusses ways that CHEs can help to improve the health of pregnant women. The lesson plans in this manual can be used in at least a couple of ways: (1) to prepare short-term teams or (2) to teach the topic to any small group. DOWNLOAD = 1MB - ORDER NUMBER: WCLW- $0.00

Helping without Hurting Workshop: These lessons are based on the book, When Helping Hurts, by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert (2009). The ideas are challenging and thought-provoking, leading to a new understanding of short-term missions. Comparing Relief and Development uses the River Crossing Story to demonstrate relief from development. Then short-term teams are challenged to apply this to their own situation—how can they promote development and not just provide relief? Risks of Relief examines the risks of outsiders providing relief, and examines ways to do this better, using more local leadership. Doing Missions without Causing Harm explains that, for people in developing nations, doing missions with outsiders may be like “dancing with an elephant”. In this lesson, the participants calculate the true cost of building a house, and then develop principles or guidelines for short-term teams. The lesson plans in this manual can be used in at least a couple of ways: (1) to prepare short-term teams or (2) to teach the topic to any small group. DOWNLOAD = 1MB - ORDER NUMBER: HWHW- $0.00

Identifying Assets for Short Term Teams Workshop: Short-term teams often focus on the needs of their partners overseas. However, each community has resources and assets as well as needs. Assets include skills and abilities as well as physical resources. By focusing on their assets, short-term teams can build healthy relationships and encourage community ownership with sustainable results. Assets Based Community Development focuses on identifying skills or talents already present in the neighborhood, so that the neighbors can share their talents and teach each other new skills. That empowers the neighbors to work together, and also builds connections within the neighborhood. The lesson plans in this manual can be used in at least a couple of ways: (1) to prepare short-term teams or (2) to teach the topic to any small group. DOWNLOAD = 1MB - ORDER NUMBER: IAW- $0.00

Children's Bible Storying - Old Testament: Bible storying is a powerful way to share the truths of the Bible with children and with adults. After hearing the story from the Bible, children work through discussion questions in order to understand the story and apply it to their own lives: What happened? Why? How does that relate to me? They also learn to tell the stories themselves so that they can share them with their family, friends, and neighbors. Bible storying can be adapted for children of different ages. Telling the story often is accompanied by acting out the story, or doing puppet shows, mimes, or flannelgraphs. Sometimes an object or demonstration is used to illustrate the stories. The discussion questions are also adapted to the age and background of the children. The Bible stories are accompanied by coloring sheets from Calvary Chapel.
